This recording brings together the trombone, percussion, and electronic sounds of Steven Ricks and Ron Coulter for the first time in a duo setting. They previously performed together in the trio and quartet settings, RICKSPLUND+Coulter and CRAG. In fact, some of the samples used by Ricks on this recording are from those two projects.

Beside the Avoid was recorded in Casper, WY during the worst three-day snow storm to hit the area in decades, derailing recording plans and making travel to the recording studio a challenge. Did this affect the music…who knows?

Ricks utilizes pre-recorded samples, live sampling, and live processing of his trombone via Kyma and MAX/MSP, as well as a Yamaha RX11 drum machine. Coulter works from a drum set augmented with various percussion instruments, found objects, and low-fi electronics (megaphone, vibrators, feedback, contact microphones, metronomes, and various guitar pedals). Together they blend acoustic and electronic sounds into distorted, singular, bizarre sound worlds. The sonic landscape they traverse is broad and unpredictable; the listener becomes disoriented, lost and fully engaged in the act of listening.
